The Madrid railway system has started the day completely tense. A breakdown detected at 2:55 in the morning in the Atocha infrastructure has ended up impacting rush hour head-on, generating a domino effect across a large part of the network.
According to the Railway Infrastructure Administrator, the incident directly affects six main commuter lines, in addition to medium-distance trains.
Affected lines and service changes
The affected lines are:
- C2
- C3
- C4
- C7
- C8
- C10
The operation has had to adapt on the fly, with limitations and diversions that have further complicated mobility:
- The C4 from Parla only runs to Villaverde Alto
- The C4a (Alcobendas-S.S. Reyes) terminates at Chamartín
- The C4b (Colmenar Viejo) only reaches Atocha Cercanías
- The C7 runs diverted via O’Donnell
The result: accumulated delays, incomplete trains, and thousands of affected passengers.
Rush hour: the worst possible time
The impact of the breakdown has not been minor because it has coincided with the moment of greatest demand on the system: entry into Madrid for work reasons.
A breakdown in the railway infrastructure at Atocha station is causing significant delays this Wednesday morning on several lines of the Madrid Commuter network, as well as on Medium Distance trains passing through this hub.
According to Adif in a message disseminated on the social network “X”, work is being done on the incident to resolve the incident “as soon as possible” and restore normality to the service as soon as possible.
