Red Sea Global (RSG) and DarkSky International have launched the first certification worldwide created to distinguish the resorts that are actively involved in the defense of the night skies and in reducing light pollution.
Under this new standard, Desert Rock and Nujuma, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, located in the surroundings of the Red Sea, have become the first accommodations on the planet to receive the "DarkSky Approved Lodging & Resort" designation.
The program recognizes establishments that apply criteria for responsible outdoor lighting, minimizing their footprint on the natural environment and promoting the development of astrotourism.
The approach designed by RSG places the management of artificial light as one of the pillars of regenerative tourism. Limiting the waste of nighttime lighting not only helps improve energy efficiency but is also essential for preserving vulnerable species - such as sea turtle hatchlings, which are guided by the natural glow of the horizon - and for offering visitors high-quality stargazing experiences.
Currently, Red Sea Global operates 15 resorts spread across three different destinations and plans to progressively incorporate the requirements set by DarkSky across its entire portfolio.
As new properties are added, the company will continue to promote the attainment of this certification in more tourist complexes, thus consolidating its commitment to the conservation of dark skies and to a model of regenerative tourism.
