In his speech this Wednesday before Catalan businesspeople, at the Cercle d'Economia conference, the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, highlighted the importance of migrant labor for the Spanish economy. Thus, Sánchez warned that "if we do nothing" in this area, "in two or three decades Spain could end up with a workforce like that of 1980-1990".

"Those who talk about deportations or say that migration is not needed are not only lying but are condemning the future prosperity of the country," asserted the President of the Executive, who shortly after concluded with the following statement: "It is evident that the dilemma is whether we want to have open societies and, therefore, prosperous ones, or closed societies and, therefore, impoverished ones."

Advantage of Latin American Migration

Regarding the origin of this migrant population, Sánchez sees a great advantage for Spain due to the number of people arriving in the country from Latin America, "a very similar migration from a cultural and linguistic point of view." Pedro Sánchez took the opportunity to indicate that in the current extraordinary process of regulating migrants, the majority of beneficiaries are Latin Americans "who already live among us."

On how to manage this immigration, Sánchez said that "we have to do it intelligently, fight against mafias, and carry out integration processes that allow us to coexist."
