Bookings made from Spain to African destinations have experienced a rebound of 109.4% between January and mid-May 2026 compared to the same period last year, according to data from the travel platform Kiwi.com. The company details that the total volume of passengers who flew to the continent increased by 86.7% in that period.
These figures reflect a clear change in the preferences of Spanish tourists, who are increasingly combining nearby getaways with proposals focused on local culture and nature.
Morocco continues to be the main protagonist of this growth, concentrating 71% of the total traffic from Spain. Within the Maghreb country, Marrakech is the most requested destination, with 39% of passengers, followed by Tangier, Fez, Cairo, and Rabat.
Boom in long-distance travel and cheaper tickets
Beyond the north of the continent, the report indicates a strong boost in long-haul travel. South Africa emerges as the most dynamic market, with an increase of 698.6% in the number of travelers, which means multiplying the 2025 records by almost eight.
Other destinations such as Tanzania, Kenya, and Cape Verde also show a clearly upward trend, linked above all to adventure tourism and high-end proposals.
This pull in demand coincides with a containment of transport costs. The average price of tickets decreased by 3.8%, while the median fare recorded a year-on-year decrease of 15.5%.
Regarding departure airports, Madrid and Barcelona continue to concentrate the majority of operations. However, Seville has emerged as the airport with the most intense growth towards Africa, registering an increase of 195% in the number of passengers compared to the previous year.
