The total solar eclipse on August 12, whose path will cover a large part of the Iberian Peninsula, is causing a strong surge in accommodation searches in northern and inland provinces of Spain. According to data from Booking.com, international demand for the night of the phenomenon shows increases of over 500%.
The area of maximum visibility has become a magnet for tourism towards rural destinations and towns usually outside the summer vacation circuits. This diversion of tourist flows directly impacts the network of small and medium-sized enterprises linked to hospitality, local commerce, and restoration in these territories.
In the case of foreign travelers, searches for overnight stays from August 12 to 13 experience very significant increases compared to usual periods. The province of Soria leads the interest with a year-on-year increase of 522%, followed by León, with a rise of 356%, Palencia, which increases by 345%, Burgos, with a 325%, Teruel, with a 230%, Lugo, with a 198%, Valladolid, with a 161%, and Oviedo, with a 115%.
The national tourist is also reinforcing their interest in traveling to places with low light pollution and clear skies located within the path of the eclipse. Among Spanish users, searches are particularly concentrated in Palencia, where they increase by 121%, A Coruña, with a 64%, Soria, with a 49%, Guadalajara, with a 22%, and Teruel, with a 20%.
For those who wish to take advantage of the eclipse as an excuse for a special getaway, the platform proposes several unique accommodations located in privileged points for observation. Among them is La Torre del Visco, a rural estate from the 15th century hidden in the Matarraña region (Teruel), where contemplating the sky is an essential part of the experience, as well as the Hotel Rural O Cruce do Burgo, in Friol, which offers a quiet base in the middle of the Camino Primitivo.
Likewise, the phenomenon can be observed from the Molino de Alcuneza, in Sigüenza, an old rehabilitated mill that has a Michelin-starred restaurant and spa. In the province of León, Palacete Colonial stands out, located in a restored historic building, and ARVA Santiago, which has designed a specific proposal for eclipse observation in its gardens.
