The general secretary of CCOO, Unai Sordo, has urged public administrations this Thursday to ensure that the macroeconomic growth that Spain is experiencing has a real reflection in the household economy of the working class.

"And this is done with wages, fighting in collective agreements and with much more effective and ambitious housing policies," he pointed out to the media after joining a demonstration in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria called to denounce the current labor conditions in the archipelago.

Sordo stressed that, according to official data, Spain is the country among the major European nations that is growing the most, employment is at historic highs "and there have never been more people working," indefinite hiring has acquired "very important" weight, and, if average wages are analyzed, they also show increases. "But this is only one part of the picture," he clarified.

At the same time, he emphasized that a high rate of precarious employment persists, with many low-quality jobs that are "poorly paid," and that there are 9.5 million people who, despite having a job "and even with salary increases," see their income "not enough to make ends meet."

"There are prices that erode families' purchasing power, specifically the prices of essential products and especially housing. And there the union places the great demand of the moment. Macroeconomic growth must be transferred to all working-class households in our country," he highlighted.

Likewise, Sordo has censured that "it cannot be" that housing prices are "skyrocketing" and has stressed that CCOO "does not resign itself to this scenario. "We want to fight for collective agreements -- he continued -- and urge administrations to be much braver in containing housing prices that are absolutely abusive," he stressed.
