A cargo ship was hit early this Tuesday by a projectile of still unclear origin near the coasts of Oman, in the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic enclave that remains at the center of tensions in the Middle East conflict.
The incident occurred 20 nautical miles (about 37 kilometers) northeast of the Omani town of Jasab and was reported by the ship's own crew via channel 16 of VHF maritime communication, according to information provided by the UK's Maritime Trade Operations center (UKMTO, for its acronym in English).
For now, an investigation has been launched to clarify the specific circumstances of the attack. Meanwhile, the maritime authority has asked vessels transiting the area to exercise caution and report any unusual or suspicious activity.
This episode off the coast of Oman takes place just a day after the same British agency reported an "incident" recorded in the same area.
In that case, the UKMTO indicated that the captain of another vessel had heard an explosion "very close" to his ship while also sailing 20 nautical miles (about 37 kilometers) northeast of the city of Jasab.
This Monday, the President of the United States, Donald Trump, has suggested that the Strait of Hormuz could reopen this Tuesday, after announcing contacts with Iranian authorities to try to end the conflict that began in late February, a possibility that has already been rejected from Tehran.
