The journalist and well-known Cuban dissident Yoani Sánchez was arrested this Thursday by security forces when she was leaving her home in the province of La Habana, and since then her whereabouts have been unknown, according to the digital outlet she directs, 14ymedio.

The site has denounced that Sánchez was "abducted by the political police this Thursday at 9:30 a.m. (local time) when she was leaving her home" in the neighborhood of Plaza de la Revolución, in the namesake municipality of Cuba’s capital.

The reporter and activist managed to briefly communicate with the newsroom to report what had happened: "She managed to send a message in which she warned—barely with four words—about her situation. Since then, there has been no news of Sánchez," 14ymedio has recounted.

Amnesty International has corroborated the detention. "The violent detention of the independent journalist Yoani Sánchez by agents of the State Security in Havana is being denounced," Erika Guevara, director of policies and campaigns at the NGO, said on social media, who has held the Government of Miguel Díaz-Canel responsible for trying to "silence the voices of journalists, who document and report human rights violations."
