The newly elected Labour leader, Andy Burnham, who will assume the position of Prime Minister of the United Kingdom within hours once Keir Starmer's resignation is formalized, has guaranteed that he will govern "differently" and has indicated that he is already analyzing a package of initiatives to address the cost of living.
"Judge me in six or twelve months if I have fallen back into that. I am going to really strive for it not to be so. Politics needs to mark a before and after," Burnham stated in an interview with the newspaper 'The Times'.
In the same vein, he insisted that it is essential to introduce profound changes in the country's politics after "a decade in which things simply have not worked." "We can continue the same or try to do it another way. I am going to try to do things differently," he emphasized.
The former mayor of Manchester has stressed that there will be "measures soon" to alleviate the burden on citizens due to the rising cost of living. "It is much more about what really matters, which is the pressure that people feel on their finances, and what we hear time and again knocking on doors in Makerfield," he explained, referring to his recent campaign in that constituency, which allowed him to obtain the seat and, from the House of Commons, run in the internal elections of the Labour Party.
Burnham has highlighted that this situation directly impacts the day-to-day lives of Britons, also in their leisure time and in the possibility of going on vacation. "That is where the problem is, right?" he pointed out, noting that he is in contact with the Department of Economy to assess possible measures, about which he has avoided giving details.
His words are known just hours before he officially assumes the leadership of the Government, a procedure that will be completed when Starmer makes his departure effective. The still Prime Minister submitted his resignation last June, pressured by internal dissent in the Labour Party after a prolonged leadership crisis and several chained political controversies.
