This Sunday, at 4:00 PM (11:00 PM in peninsular Spain), voting concluded in Colombia's polling stations for the second round of the presidential elections, in which the far-right contender Abelardo de la Espriella and the official leftist candidate Iván Cepeda are vying for the head of state position.
During the day, the EU Electoral Observation Mission (MOE-UE) has highlighted the role of poll watchers and the fact that all supervised polling stations opened normally.
"The European Electoral Observation Mission has been deployed since January. We have covered the entire process and will continue to do so until its completion. We will follow the counts and any potential challenges that may arise," explained the deputy head of the MOE-UE, Spaniard José Antonio Gabriel.
"We have been informed of the opening of all polling stations where we have observed. This is another symptom of something we have seen consistently, both in the congressional elections and in the first round. It is a highly effective performance by the Registrar's Office in organizing the elections," he added.
Furthermore, he highlighted the large presence of electoral observers from each of the campaigns and stressed that it has been a "fluid and orderly" process, with great respect for procedures by the electoral juries and with significant transparency measures.
In this second round, the presidency is being decided between Cepeda and De la Espriella, after both emerged as the most voted in the first round held on May 31. At that time, De la Espriella won with 43.74% of the votes, ahead of the 40.9% obtained by Cepeda.
