The Electric Union of Cuba (UNE) communicated on the night of this Sunday a new widespread failure in the National Electroenergetic System (SEN), which has once again left the country without electric service just a few hours after it was reported that the supply had been restored in the western area.
"A total disconnection of the National Electroenergetic System occurs," the state company pointed out in a brief message published on social media.
This new outage occurs just one day after a partial blackout that affected the western part of the island, including Havana, until the UNE notified the restoration of service shortly after 1:00 (local time, 7:00 in mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands).
In mid-July, a month marked by several general blackouts throughout the territory, the UNE stated that the system failure is "the direct consequence" of the "energy suffocation orchestrated by the United States" against the country.
These episodes are part of a particularly delicate scenario, as in addition to the embargo that has weighed on the island for six decades, the United States has added since the beginning of the year an energy blockade that has occasionally caused the complete paralysis of the supply. This strategy has been described by the Cuban president, Miguel Díaz-Canel, as a "genocidal policy" that causes "serious harm" to the people of Cuba.
