Kuwaiti authorities have pointed to Iran this Thursday as responsible for a missile and drone attack against their territory, without any victims or material damage having been reported for now. The accusation comes after the Iranian Revolutionary Guard claimed responsibility for an attack against a United States "air base" in retaliation for a US bombing against the south of the Persian country.
The Kuwaiti Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed its "firm condemnation" of the "Iranian attacks against Kuwaiti territory with missiles and drones," emphasizing that they constitute "a dangerous escalation" and "a flagrant violation of Kuwait's sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity," as well as "a direct threat to the lives of civilians and vital infrastructure."
In a statement disseminated on social media, the department has lamented that "this escalation comes at a time when several brotherly and friendly countries are undertaking concerted efforts to reduce tensions and prevent further escalation in the region," and has urged Tehran to "immediately and unconditionally cease these atrocious attacks."
The Kuwaiti Government has insisted that Iran "is fully responsible" for these attacks, which it has described as "a flagrant aggression against the sovereignty of the State of Kuwait and a grave violation of International Law, the United Nations Charter, and Security Council Resolution 2817 (of the UN)," which condemns Iranian attacks against Middle Eastern countries in response to the offensive launched on February 28 by the United States and Israel.
Likewise, it has emphasized that Kuwait "reserves its right to adopt all necessary measures to preserve its security and defend its territory and vital facilities against any aggression or threat, based on its inherent right to self-defense, in line with Article 51 of the UN Charter and the norms of International Law."
Hours before the Foreign Ministry's note, the Kuwaiti Army General Staff had reported that its air defense systems were "repelling missile and drone attacks," without specifying the origin of the projectiles at that time.
In parallel, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard has claimed responsibility for an attack against the "US base origin of the attack" against southern Iran and has stressed that it constitutes "a serious warning for the enemy to know that aggression will not go unpunished and that, if it is repeated."
Previously, the United States Army had indicated that its forces shot down four drones over the Strait of Hormuz and, subsequently, carried out an attack against an Iranian base in Bandar Abbas, according to a US official confirmed in statements to Europa Press.
