At least five people have lost their lives, including a twelve-year-old boy, and another 15 have been injured in a serious multiple accident that occurred this Saturday in the Tacna region, in southern Peru, involving two passenger buses and a cargo truck.

The incident took place around 5:30 a.m. (local time) at kilometer 1.292 of the Panamericana Sur highway, near the monumental complex of Alto de la Alianza, according to information released by the Peruvian chain "RPP".

The initial investigations by the Police, cited by the aforementioned media, indicate that the accident occurred when an interprovincial bus attempted to overtake the truck and invaded the opposite lane in a section affected by "dense" fog that drastically reduced visibility, colliding head-on with the other passenger transport vehicle.

The 15 injured were immediately evacuated to the Regional Hospital of Tacna, where they remain hospitalized and under specialized medical care. Meanwhile, the National Police is conducting investigations to clarify the circumstances of the incident and establish possible responsibilities.

Traffic on this section of the Panamericana Sur has been limited while waiting for the intervention of the competent authorities and for the rescue operations and the cleaning and removal of the wrecked vehicles from the roadway to conclude.
