The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, has emphasized the importance of ensuring "the rights and dignity" of all people arriving in Ceuta, in a context marked by the crossing of thousands of people, mostly of Moroccan nationality, from Morocco to the Spanish city.
"The Secretary-General wants to ensure that the rights and dignity of all people arriving in Ceuta are respected," his deputy spokesman, Farhan Haq, stated in remarks to Europa Press.
At the same time, the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) has rejected the idea that the increase in arrivals in Ceuta is due to "a single cause," considering that there are "multiple" elements that would explain why, in the last week, more than 2,000 migrants have reached the autonomous city.
"While the recent interpretation of a legal provision by the Spanish Supreme Court may be one of the factors influencing the current situation, many other factors must also be taken into account, and it would not be appropriate to attribute the increase in arrivals to a single event," UNHCR pointed out.
This Thursday, Ceuta has experienced the largest migration crisis since May 2021, with the continuous entry of thousands of people, mostly young Moroccans, although also families with women and minors, who have managed to access the autonomous city by bypassing the Tarajal pier and evading the border fence.
In light of this scenario, Spain and Morocco have agreed to strengthen coordination to proceed with the return "as soon as possible" of all people who have entered irregularly. At the same time, the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has emphasized that both countries are collaborating to restore normalcy, while the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, will travel to Ceuta this Friday to manage the evolution of the crisis on the ground.
