The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has criticized this Thursday the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, for not specifying more his messages about the crisis in the Middle East and, in particular, for omitting direct references to the United States and Israel, which Tehran considers "the two main culprits" of the ongoing conflict.
In a message disseminated on his social networks, the Foreign Ministry spokesman, Esmaeil Baqaei, has launched several questions directed at the highest official of the UN: "Why don't you call things by their name? Why do you refuse to name the two main culprits: the United States and Israel? Why do you shy away from condemning those who have granted absolute impunity to the perpetrators of genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity, and aggression?".
Baqaei recalled an intervention by Guterres on July 23, in which the Secretary-General warned of the "alarming disregard for International Law" and stated that "impunity is spreading," something that, in Guterres' own words, "is manifesting itself very clearly in the Middle East, with devastating consequences both in the region and around the world." In light of those words, the Iranian spokesman pointed out: "You are absolutely right."
The representative of Iranian diplomacy has also urged the Secretary-General of the UN to "take responsibility and help prevent the United Nations and its normative system from suffering the same fate as the League of Nations," referring to the international organization that ended up collapsing after failing to prevent the outbreak of World War II.
