Israel's Executive has communicated this Sunday the destruction by explosives of a tunnel dug by the Lebanese Shiite militia Hezbollah in the vicinity of the town of Majdal Zun, in southern Lebanon.
"The tunnel was more than 200 meters long and more than 25 meters deep and contained hundreds of weapons and several launch silos to attack the State of Israel and its citizens," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reported in a statement.
The head of government indicated that Washington was warned in advance before proceeding with the demolition of the underground infrastructure. "The commanders and fighters of the IDF --Israel Defense Forces-- will continue to destroy terrorist infrastructure, eliminate threats to the communities of the north, and safeguard the security of the citizens of Israel," Netanyahu stressed in a message also signed by Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz.
According to military sources cited by the newspaper 'The Times of Israel', the underground passage served Hezbollah as an assembly point, depot, and launch platform for Iranian-made drones.
A few days ago, a group of Israeli journalists had access to the interior of the tunnel during a visit organized by the military authorities. At that time, it was reported that the demolition was suspended due to pressure from the United States for Israel to stop its armed operations in southern Lebanon in the context of the ceasefire agreed with Iran.
