The Israeli army has stated this Monday that the doctor who lost his life in a bombing carried out last Saturday in Deir al-Balah, in the center of the Gaza Strip, held a prominent position within the armed wing of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas).

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have identified the deceased as Jamal Abú Aoun, head of the anesthesia department at Yafa Hospital, and have described him as a "terrorist" and "platoon commander of the military wing of Hamas," the Ezeldin al-Qasam Brigades.

"He led Hamas terrorists and promoted and planned terrorist plots against IDF forces and the State of Israel. During the last period, he participated in promoting Hamas's efforts to consolidate its power, rehabilitate, and strengthen itself, in violation of the ceasefire agreement," they stated in a statement.

According to the military statement, the doctor was the target of a "selective attack" by the IDF, and his activities would be "another example of Hamas's cynical use of civilian positions to promote terrorist activity."

Aoun lost his life in an IDF bombing of a Hamas internal police checkpoint, in which three other people were also injured.

Updated casualty toll in the Gaza Strip

The latest toll released by the Gaza Ministry of Health and updated to this Saturday records 922 deaths since October and 2,811 injured in the same period, for a total of 72,938 deaths and 172,919 injured since the start of the war.

For its part, the Gaza Ministry of Health, under Hamas control, indicated this Monday that since the ceasefire came into effect, on October 11, 2025, 932 deaths and 2,859 injured have been recorded, a figure that includes two deaths and 40 injured from bombings registered in the last 24 hours over the Strip.

The Ministry finally added that, since the beginning of the Israeli offensive following the attacks of October 7, 2023—which caused about 1,200 deaths and nearly 250 hostages, according to the official toll—72,941 deaths and 172,967 injured have been documented.
