The Minister of Public Security of Sri Lanka, Ananda Wijepala, has communicated that more than a thousand police officers have been suspended from their duties for their alleged participation in various crimes.

According to the Ceylonese news portal News First, some of these officials have been removed for their involvement in drug trafficking and for maintaining ties with organized crime gangs. Other officers have been expelled from their posts for cases of negligence in the performance of their duties or for accepting bribes.

Given this situation, the head of Public Security has made public the initiation of a series of internal investigations with the aim of clarifying the complaints filed against the implicated members of the Police.
