U.S. authorities reported this Monday the death of a person in a shooting in the state of Maine, in the northeast of the country, in which agents of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) allegedly participated. This is the second similar episode in less than a week.

The Speaker of the Maine House of Representatives, Ryan Fecteau, confirmed the death and pointed to ICE as possibly responsible for the incident. "The State Police and the Department of Public Safety are now on the scene to gather details and the FBI is also expected to investigate," he said in a statement. "These are the details I have at this time. I will provide more information as it becomes available," he added.

For its part, the Biddeford Police explained to CNN that a "police incident" has been registered in the area and stressed that, for now, there is no threat to residents.

This shooting comes just days after a man died in Houston, Texas, after being shot by an ICE agent while driving his car to work.

The victim died from the severity of the injuries caused in what ICE initially described as a targeted operation, although the deceased was not the target of said action. This case triggered massive protests against the methods of these agents.

The new shooting has reignited demands for greater oversight and accountability of ICE agents, a debate that intensified earlier this year after Rene Good, a 37-year-old mother, and Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse, were killed by federal immigration agents during an operation in Minneapolis.
