Pope Leo XIV stressed this Thursday that, although States have the right to establish rules at their borders, migrant people must be treated "as human beings and not worse than animals." He affirmed this during a press conference aboard the papal plane on which he was returning to Rome after concluding his eleven-day pastoral trip through Africa.

The pontiff has responded to questions from journalists from Spanish-language media about the migratory situation in Spain and his upcoming visit to the country, including a stop in the Canary Islands, one of the main entry points for irregular migration to Europe.
