The spiritual leader of the Tibetan people, the Dalai Lama, left a hospital in New Delhi, the capital of India, this Friday after undergoing knee replacement surgery, according to a statement released by his office on behalf of the medical center responsible for the operation.

"His Holiness the Dalai Lama successfully underwent left knee replacement surgery on Monday, June 8, in New Delhi," said Rajesh Malhotra, of Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals. "His Holiness is stable and is expected to make a full recovery," he added.

In this regard, he stressed that it is "a great honor" for the hospital and the medical team to have treated the Dalai Lama. "We are grateful for the trust placed in us and feel privileged to have been able to contribute to his care," Malhotra concluded.

The 90-year-old Dalai Lama lives in exile in the Indian town of Dharamshala and has led the institution since February 1940, amid a prolonged standoff between Chinese authorities and the exiled Tibetan community over the future of this spiritual leadership.
