The president of the United States, Donald Trump, has confirmed that the delegation sent to Pakistan to unblock negotiations with Iran is already on its way. The mission is headed by Vice President JD Vance, accompanied by Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who are also already en route to Islamabad.
An attempt to de-escalate the crisis
The move comes after talks between Washington and Tehran were practically paralyzed following the boarding of an Iranian ship by the US military, an episode that has raised tensions in the region.
"There are supposed to be conversations. Right now nobody is playing," Trump stated in an interview with the New York Post.
The choice of Pakistan as a meeting point reflects the search for an indirect and less exposed channel to resume dialogue with Iran, in a context marked by mutual distrust.
The objective of the US delegation is to reopen a negotiation channel that allows containing the escalation and avoiding a greater deterioration of the situation in the Middle East. In parallel, the US president has left open the possibility of holding a direct meeting with the Iranian supreme leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Jamenei, according to the aforementioned newspaper.
