The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has reiterated his "total and absolute support" for the far-right presidential candidate in Colombia, Abelardo de la Espriella, and has underlined that the South American country will have Washington's backing if he wins the second round of the elections on June 21.
According to a message disseminated on his social networks, "The results of these elections are very important for the future of Colombia and its relationship with the United States. If Abelardo wins (...) he will have the full support and strength of the United States behind him," insisting that it is an "honor" for him to express to the candidate, known as 'El Tigre', his "total and absolute support."
The current occupant of the White House has once again described De la Espriella as an "intelligent, strong, and tenacious" leader and has predicted that he will have "tremendous success" as the Colombian head of state by "growing the economy, creating jobs, promoting trade, stopping illegal immigration, taking strong action against crime and drugs, and restoring law and order."
Trump, who already expressed himself in similar terms when he congratulated De la Espriella on his victory in the first round of the presidential elections, has also warned that in the second round he "will face a radical left-wing Marxist," referring to the candidate of the Historical Pact, Iván Cepeda, with whom he will compete for the head of state position on June 21.
