The former mayor of Barcelona, Ada Colau, has demanded that the Sumar forces consider leaving the coalition government if the PSOE continues blocking "brave" measures in housing policy, after the eviction in Madrid of Maricarmen, an 87-year-old woman.
Through a video shared on the social network Instagram, Colau has stated that "one cannot maintain a presence in a coalition government if it is not to make the maximum effort to confront the vulture funds, to confront the large property owners, to end rent-seeking and speculation and to protect a right as basic and essential as the right to housing."
The former councilor has warned that "it cannot be that their political space" ends up being "complicit" in the "cowardice" of the PSOE regarding housing, and has emphasized that this eviction must become a "turning point" to promote new public policies. "And if the PSOE is not willing, let it be clear," she has added.
Colau has pointed out that everyone assumes that the right is "friends of the speculators," but has lamented "what we do not want to know is that the progressive coalition government has not done everything it could do." "And it is terrible to have to say this, my own political space participates in that government, but when things are not done well or not done to the fullest, it must also be said in order to rectify it," she has added.
IT IS TIME TO "RECTIFY"
In this line, she has emphasized that it is time to "rectify" and acknowledge that the Executive "could have done more to prevent" Maricarmen's eviction. She has insisted that it is essential to "act now" because, if not, there is a risk of giving "wings to the far right."
Colau has also accused the president of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, of "blocking any initiative to put a stop to the vulture funds in Spain for months" and has reiterated that her political space cannot be a participant in that situation.
The former mayor has expressed her "anger" over this eviction, has denounced "police brutality" against the people gathered to try to stop it, and has criticized the mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez Almeida, whom she has labeled as "cowardly," as well as the president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, in relation to the penthouse acquired by Planifica Madrid.
To conclude, she has recalled that it was the PP, Vox, and Junts who, with their vote, overturned the anti-eviction moratorium.
