During the visit to the Congress of Deputies of Pope Leo XIV, the parliamentary spokesperson for Sumar, Verónica Martínez Barbero, personally handed the Pontiff a letter from the Madrid Tenants' Union in which they explain "the housing crisis we are suffering and more specifically how it is affecting us tenants who live in housing owned by entities linked to the Catholic Church".
"Housing policies are denying us the right to a decent roof, condemning us to allocate an ever-larger portion of our salaries to landlords, leaving us in vulnerable situations, where many families live in anguish deciding between buying food for their children or paying the landlords," they explain in a letter in which they also point to certain entities linked to the Church as aggravating factors in this situation: "Unfortunately, real estate speculation has reached entities of the Catholic Church itself".
