A soldier from the Army of Ground Forces has died this Sunday during a training activity at the San Gregorio Training Center, in Zaragoza. The deceased, identified by his initials as F. J. G. J., belonged to the X Campaign Artillery Group of the 'Guzmán el Bueno' X Brigade, as the Army of Ground Forces has confirmed through an official statement.
The soldier had joined the Armed Forces in 2018 and was assigned to that unit. For the moment, the military authorities are keeping an investigation open in order to clarify the circumstances under which the accident occurred.
A possible accident involving two military vehicles
The Spanish Association of Troops and Seamen (ATME) has relayed an initial version of what happened based on testimony received from its members. According to the organization, the accident may have occurred during maneuvers in which personnel from the Garellano 45 unit and from the X Campaign Artillery Group participated.
In accordance with this initial information, a self-propelled artillery vehicle (ATP) would have suffered an accident with an armored tracked carrier (TOA). ATME has also pointed out that another soldier may have been seriously injured and that medical services would have been mobilized to attend to those affected.
However, these details have not been confirmed by the Army of Ground Forces, which has not specified the causes of the death or the specific circumstances of the incident.
The Army conveys its condolences
After the death of the soldier became known, the Army of Ground Forces expressed its regret and conveyed its condolences to the family and colleagues of the deceased.
«At this moment of immense sadness for all members of the Army of Ground Forces, we want to express our most sincere condolences and unconditional support to their family and colleagues of the 'Guzmán el Bueno' Brigade,» the official statement says.
For its part, ATME has also regretted the death and offered its support to the soldier’s loved ones and to the members of the affected units. The association has taken the incident as an opportunity to recall the risks associated with carrying out military functions and to call for greater recognition of the profession.
The investigation remains open to determine how the accident occurred at the San Gregorio Training Center.
