The Government of Spain has expressed this Thursday its support for Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania in the face of "the campaign of intimidation and disinformation launched by Russia," as well as "repeated incursions" of drones into the airspace of these Baltic countries.
In an official note, reported by Europa Press, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has condemned these actions and also "the threats of use of force" directed against Latvia during the session of the United Nations Security Council on May 19. "These are condemnable provocations that only seek to increase tension in the region," stated the Department headed by José Manuel Albares.
In the same statement, the Executive emphasizes that "Spain reiterates its firm commitment to the security of every member of the European Union and ally in NATO, as well as its support for Ukraine in the defense of its sovereignty and in the search for a just and lasting peace, in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations."
The pronouncement comes after messages from Moscow accusing the Baltic States of preparing hostile actions against Russia or allowing the use of their territory, airspace, or military facilities to carry out attacks against this country.
Furthermore, the Latvian Armed Forces have activated anti-aircraft alarms after a drone entered an area in the south of the country, bordering Lithuania and Belarus. The emergency situation lasted for about four hours and adds to the recent security crisis registered in Lithuania and Estonia due to new violations of their airspace.
