The Federación Rural Galega (FRUGA) has urged the entire agricultural sector in Galicia to back the general strike called for 11 November and to join the mobilizations promoted by the CIG throughout the Galician territory.
The organization warns that the Galician countryside is going through a “critical” situation due to the rise in production costs, the “low prices perceived by farms, the lack or deterioration of public services, the housing crisis, and the impact of a prolonged drought”.
In the area of market regulation, the FRUGA calls on both the Xunta de Galicia and the central Government to ensure the “effective” enforcement of the Law on the Food Chain, in order to secure “fair” prices that, at a minimum, cover production costs.
The entity also demands from the state Executive the implementation of a permanent professional agricultural diesel fuel, with reduced taxation applied directly at the time of supply. At the regional level, it asks the Xunta to put in place urgent short-term aid and structural measures in response to drought and climate change.
Among the FRUGA’s main demands is also the defense of Galicia’s ability to decide on its spending priorities, as well as the rejection of “unfair” competition stemming from international trade agreements such as the one with Mercosur.
