The president of the Parliament of the Canary Islands, Astrid Pérez, highlighted this Wednesday the progress in the opening of the autonomous Chamber and in the direct involvement of citizens in the drafting of regulations, after reaching a historic maximum of participation through the platform "Parlamenta".
During the processing of the Draft Law on Sustainable Management of the Tourist Use of Housing, 990 citizen comments were registered, the highest figure since the participation tool of the Parliament was launched in 2017, which represents 94.5% of all contributions received in the 38 legislative initiatives that have followed this channel.
For Astrid Pérez, one of the priority axes of this legislature has been to transform participatory democracy into something tangible, allowing the population to effectively intervene in the drafting of the laws that affect their day-to-day lives.
"Many of the most important laws are being published so that all citizens who want to can make proposals and participate in the drafting of a law," said the president.
The head of the Chamber emphasized that, over these three years, the Parliament has strengthened the participation instruments so that any interested person can make comments and suggestions during the processing of the main legislative initiatives.
As an example, she recalled that the Law on Sustainable Management of the Tourist Use of Housing has received 990 citizen contributions, a historic record for the institution.
The president stressed that these contributions allow parliamentary groups to know firsthand the opinions of citizens while legislative initiatives are debated and enrich parliamentary debate with proposals from society, according to a note from the Chamber.
In the opinion of Astrid Pérez, "this record of participation reflects the commitment of the Parliament of the Canary Islands to an institution that is increasingly open, transparent, and close, in which citizens have real channels to convey their proposals and contribute to the process of drafting laws".
Since the creation of "Parlamenta", the Parliament of the Canary Islands has submitted 38 legislative initiatives to citizen participation processes.
Of them, seven have received comments, with the Law on Sustainable Regulation of the Tourist Use of Housing being the one that has concentrated the greatest citizen involvement in the history of the Chamber.
