Pesquerías Nores Marín, owner of the Galician fishing vessel "Villa de Pintanxo" sunk in the waters of Newfoundland (Canada) in February 2022, has requested the Audiencia Nacional to grant more time to pay the million-euro bond intended to cover the possible liabilities that may be demanded from the company after the trial is held.
According to the spokesperson for the families of the 21 fatalities of the shipwreck, María José de Pazo, the court has informed the families that the company has requested a two-month extension to make the deposit of the money. From now on, it remains pending to know the decision that the judge will make regarding this request.
This request comes after the Audiencia Nacional decided last week to send two executives of the owner of the "Villa de Pitanxo" and the captain of the ship to trial for the death of 21 crew members in the disaster.
In an order reported by Europa Press, the judge of the case, Ismael Moreno, decided to open an oral trial against the two main responsible parties of the owner Grupo Nores Marín, José Antonio Nores Rodríguez and José Antonio Nores Ortega, father and son, and against the captain of the vessel, Juan Enrique Padín, for alleged crimes of homicide due to gross negligence and reckless injuries in ideal competition with another against workers' rights.
The magistrate identified Pesquerías Nores Marín as the subsidiary civil responsible party and the insurer British Marine Luxembourg as the direct civil responsible party.
Additionally, he required the three accused to deposit 44 million euros as a bond to secure the possible economic liabilities that may be imposed on them, and demanded that the subsidiary civil responsible party, Pesquerías Nores, jointly guarantee the same amount along with the three defendants, as well as the direct civil responsible party, the insurer British Marine Luxembourg.
Last Tuesday, none of the three accused appeared to collect the order to open the trial in court, so they were again summoned for August 5 at 10:30 a.m.
