The State Meteorological Agency, AEMET, maintains this Saturday warnings in areas of 16 autonomous communities for the risk of maximum temperatures, rain, or storms. The alert map affects the entire country except for Galicia and combines two main phenomena: intense heat, which is the focus of the day in 15 communities, and strong storms, with the possibility of hail and very intense wind gusts in various points of the north and the interior of the peninsula.
The majority of the warnings are activated starting at 1:00 PM, coinciding with the central hours of the day, when temperatures will reach their highest values and instability may generate locally strong storms. Depending on the area, AEMET has set an orange level for significant danger, or a yellow level for low danger.
Up to 40 degrees in Andalusia and Valencia
The most intense heat is expected in Andalusia and the Valencian Community, where maximums of up to 40 degrees will be reached. In Andalusia, the orange warning affects the Cordoban and Sevillian countryside, Andévalo and Condado, in Huelva, and Morena and the Guadalquivir Valley, in Jaén. Other points remain under a yellow warning with temperatures of up to 38 degrees, such as the Cadiz countryside or Antequera.
In the Valencian Community, the orange warning is concentrated on the southern coast of Valencia, also with maximums expected of 40 degrees. Additionally, the northern interior of Castellón and Valencia is under a yellow warning for rain and storms, with accumulations that can reach 20 liters per square meter in one hour.
Strong storms in Aragon, Cantabria, Navarre, and the Basque Country
The other major concern of the day is the storms. In Aragon, the significant danger is concentrated in the Lower Aragon of Teruel, the Ebro River Basin of Zaragoza and the south of Huesca, where AEMET has activated an orange warning for rain and storms. In these areas, an accumulated precipitation of 30 liters per square meter in one hour is expected, with the possibility of very strong gusts and large hail.
There is also an orange warning for storms in Cantabria, specifically on the coast, the center, and the Villaverde valley, where hail and very strong winds may occur. In those same points, a yellow warning is active for rain, with accumulations of 15 liters per square meter in one hour.
In Navarra, the Cantabrian slope, the center, and the Pyrenees appear in orange due to storms, while in Basque Country there are five areas under orange alert: the Nervión Basin in Álava, and the interior and coast of Guipúzcoa and Bizkaia. These points are also in yellow due to rain.
Castilla y León, Asturias and La Rioja, watching the sky
In Castilla y León, the alerts combine heat, storms, and rain. In areas of Ávila, Burgos, and Soria, maximum temperatures of between 34 and 36 degrees are expected, while the orange alert for storms affects the Cantabrian mountain range of Burgos and the north of the province, with the possibility of hail and very strong gusts of wind.
Asturias maintains yellow alerts for storms in the eastern coast, the central area, the mining valleys, the mountain range, and the Picos de Europa. In La Rioja, the Ebro River area is under yellow alert for temperatures of up to 36 degrees and for storms.
Heat in Madrid, Extremadura, Murcia and Castilla-La Mancha
In the Community of Madrid, Extremadura, and the Region of Murcia, the risk is yellow due to high temperatures. In Madrid, maximums could reach 38 degrees in the metropolitan area and Henares. In Extremadura, points in Cáceres and Badajoz will also reach 38 degrees.
In Murcia, the most affected areas will be the northwest, the Vega del Segura, the Valle del Guadalentín, Lorca, and Águilas, also with maximums of up to 38 degrees. In Castilla-La Mancha, all five provinces are under yellow alert for heat, with values of 38 degrees in the Toledo Mancha, the Tagus Valley, and the Alcudia and Madrona mountains in Ciudad Real.
Catalonia, Balearic Islands and Canary Islands also under alert
In Catalonia, the heat activates yellow alerts in areas such as the pre-coastal region of Barcelona and Girona, the central depression of Lleida, and the Lleida Pyrenees, with maximums of between 34 and 36 degrees. In the Lleida Pyrenees, there is also an orange alert for rain, with accumulations of 30 liters per square meter in one hour.
In Balearic Islands, the yellow alert for heat affects Ibiza, Formentera, and areas in the north, northeast, and interior of Mallorca, with thermometers that can rise up to 36 or 38 degrees. In Canary Islands, the alerts are mostly for heat, with maximums of 36 degrees in the east, south, and west of Gran Canaria, although Lanzarote is also under alert for wind, with maximum gusts of 70 kilometers per hour.
High risk of fires
The widespread heat raises the risk of fires in much of the country. Extreme temperatures, dry ground, wind, and the possibility of storms with electrical activity create a particularly delicate day for forest areas.
Authorities recommend avoiding any activity that may generate fire or sparks, not throwing cigarette butts, not leaving waste behind, and not parking on dry vegetation. It is also requested to respect the current restrictions in forests and recreational areas, and to immediately notify 112 if smoke or fire is observed.
A day to exercise extreme caution
The combination of intense heat, strong storms, hail, wind, and fire risk makes this Saturday a day of special meteorological vigilance. AEMET has active warnings in almost the entire country and recommends following the evolution of official alerts, especially during the central hours of the day and in the afternoon, when the highest maximums may coincide with storm episodes.
The recommendation for the population is clear: avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, hydrate frequently, reduce physical activity during the hottest hours, protect the elderly, children, and chronically ill individuals, and exercise extreme caution when traveling by road or going out into the natural environment.
