The Deputy Counselor of the President of the Canary Islands, Octavio Caraballo, expressed this Thursday the support of the archipelago to Ceuta in the face of the intense migratory pressure that the autonomous city is suffering, and has joined the call directed to the Government of Spain to articulate an adequate response.
Caraballo, in statements sent to the media, emphasized that "it cannot" be overlooked that the situation Ceuta is going through "is not a problem" exclusive to the city, but "a challenge for the State and also a European challenge."
In this sense, he recalled that the Canary Islands knows "this reality" well, which is why it has been "demanding for years that no border territory should face a structural phenomenon like migration alone."
"We ask for what we have always asked for the Canary Islands and we ask for it today also for Ceuta. That is why we join the call to the Government of Spain to promote, without further delay, a response that must be shared, coordinated, and based on institutional co-responsibility," he added, stressing that when "a border is under extraordinary pressure, the response must be from the entire State."
Likewise, he emphasized that when that border "is also a border of Europe, it is essential that the European Union continues to get involved with resources, cooperation, and a migration policy that combines humanity, security, and shared responsibility."
To conclude, he reiterated that the Canary Islands "will always stand by Ceuta" because it is aware that solidarity "cannot depend on the territory or the islands of those who govern. It must always be applied and without excuse."
