Més per Mallorca, integrated into the Sumar Parliamentary Group in Congress, will defend in the coming days before the Territorial Policy Commission a proposal aimed at promoting the review and updating of the Special Regime for the Balearic Islands (REIB), incorporating new indicators related to the floating population and effective demographic pressure.

This initiative, formulated as a non-binding proposal -- that is, an initiative of a non-legislative nature -- will be addressed this Wednesday in the Lower House's Territorial Policy Commission. Més per Mallorca's intention is to extend the validity of the REB beyond December 31, 2028, in order to prevent the regime from becoming ineffective from that date.

According to the content of the proposal, to which Europa Press has had access, Més proposes to introduce the necessary legal modifications to stably and permanently secure the current fiscal, economic, and territorial compensation measures included in the special regime.

Likewise, the party integrated into Sumar proposes to review the calculation criteria for the insularity factor and the territorialized investments that the State allocates to the Balearic Islands, so that indicators on floating population, effective demographic pressure, and the costs derived from the island condition are included.

This reform aims to "guarantee adequate and sufficient funding that allows for the correction of the historical deficit in public infrastructure and services."

Fiscal incentives and public transport in the REIB

In another section, the proposal contemplates adding fiscal, economic, and financial incentives to the REIB aimed at sectors considered strategic, such as renewable energies, technological innovation, the circular economy, local industry, and food sovereignty.

Finally, Més incorporates a specific point in the text to ensure the continuity of the subsidy for collective land public transport in the Balearic Islands, with the aim of consolidating the measures of free travel and fare reduction as tools for sustainable mobility, social cohesion, and real compensation for the extra costs associated with island status.
