A 21-year-old young woman lost her life this Saturday during a bungee jump on the Skeleton Bridge, in the municipality of Limeira, in the Brazilian state of Sao Paulo, after being thrown by mistake without the essential safety rope, according to local authorities.
The Military Police have confirmed the death of the young woman while she was participating in a 'bungee jump' activity organized by a private company, as the rope had not been attached to the participant before she jumped. For these events, six people have been arrested for their alleged involvement in the organization of the event.
Emergency services attended the scene, who could only certify the cardiorespiratory arrest and the death of the young woman on the bridge itself, before the body was transferred to the Legal Medical Institute. The incident was recorded on video and the images have been disseminated subsequently.
The Limeira City Council has made public that it will file a complaint against the Brazilian federal government for omission. The council has pointed out that since the beginning of 2025 it had been processing requests with federal authorities to demand safety measures on the bridge, without receiving a response. The "tragedy" of this Saturday "makes the continuation of this omission unsustainable".
The municipality emphasizes that the responsibility for the inspection, maintenance, and access control to the bridge "falls exclusively" on the federal government.
"It is necessary to determine responsibility for the lack of access control to a federal area that has presented known risks for years and still lacks the necessary protection measures," said the mayor of Limeira, Murilo Félix.
