The majority made up of PP, Vox, and Coalición Canaria in the Joint Commission (Congress-Senate) on Insularity has rejected a proposal from the PSOE that aimed, among other aspects, for the presidents of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, and of the Balearic Islands, Marga Prohens, to commit to the central government's regional financing plan, "providing improvements from loyalty."
The initiative, of a non-legislative nature, had been registered by the socialists in this Joint Commission with the aim of urging the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands to "support and contribute constructively to the proposal of the new model, providing improvements from institutional loyalty and avoiding blockages," but PP, Vox, and CC have united their votes against it.
Despite the rejection, the PSOE maintains that if both regional governments choose to block the proposal, it could imply "giving up estimated funding increases of 412 million euros annually for Illes Balears and 611 million euros annually for the Canary Islands in 2027 compared to the current model."
The rejected text also urged to continue advancing in the Council of Fiscal and Financial Policy and within the framework of "multilateral dialogue with the autonomous communities" to finalize the new regional financing model promoted by the Government.
The socialist initiative was presented in May 2026, and the Council of Fiscal and Financial Policy met at the beginning of September of this year to validate the regional financing proposal of the Executive, counting only on the favorable support of Catalonia and the Canary Islands.
