The president of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, visits this Saturday the Advanced Command Post deployed in Cenicientos, one of the key coordination points of the emergency due to the fires in the west of the Community of Madrid.
The visit takes place amid the ongoing evolution of the fires affecting the region and after several days of evacuations, lockdowns, road closures, and mobilization of regional, state, and European resources.
Sánchez is accompanied by the Minister of the Interior, on a day marked by direct monitoring of the emergency and by the coordination of the devices deployed on the ground.
Meeting of the state emergency committee
During his visit, the president attends the meeting of the State Coordination and Direction Committee of the State Emergency Plan, known as CECOD.
This body coordinates the actions of the State when an emergency requires an integrated response among different administrations and services. In the case of the fires in Madrid, its role is crucial due to the magnitude of the operation and the impact on several municipalities.
The meeting allows for reviewing the evolution of the fronts, the weather situation, the needs for ground and air resources, evacuations, lockdowns, and the state of the affected infrastructures.
A national emergency
Sánchez's presence in Cenicientos underscores the national dimension that the emergency has acquired.
The fires in the Community of Madrid and Ávila have forced the activation of extraordinary coordination mechanisms, with the participation of the Ministry of the Interior, Civil Protection, Military Emergency Unit, regional firefighting services, Civil Guard, firefighters, medical personnel, and municipalities.
