The Civil Guard will deploy more than 24,000 agents to ensure safety during the total solar eclipse scheduled for next Wednesday, August 12, an exceptional astronomical event that will position Spain as one of the main global scenarios for its observation.
The phenomenon will attract a significant influx of visitors to numerous points across the national territory, especially in natural areas, viewpoints, rural areas, and open spaces where a high concentration of people is expected. For this reason, the armed institute has designed a specific device to reinforce citizen security, manage mobility, and protect the environment.
More than 660 observation points under surveillance
The Civil Guard has identified more than 660 observation points located within its jurisdiction, representing 84% of all points identified across the country. In these areas, agents will intensify surveillance through a deployment adapted to the needs of each territory.
The operation will include personnel from Citizen Security, Traffic Group, SEPRONA, Maritime Service, Aerial Service, GREIM, GEAS, USECIC, Fiscal and Border Units, unmanned aerial vehicle teams UAS and PEGASO, Mobile Citizen Attention Offices, Operational Centers, and the rest of the necessary specialties.
Safety, traffic, and response capacity
The deployment will reinforce the preventive and visible presence of the Civil Guard on the main communication routes, at the access points to the observation sites, and in the natural spaces where a greater concentration of spectators is anticipated.
The objective is to channel and manage traffic flows, facilitate mobility, prevent infractions and crimes, and ensure a rapid response to any emergency. The high influx of vehicles and people may cause delays, improper parking, access difficulties for emergency services, and risk situations in forested areas or difficult evacuation zones.
Ground, maritime, aerial means, and drones
The device will be deployed by land, sea, and air, with support from ground, maritime, and aerial means, in addition to technological capabilities linked to the Advanced Command Post, which will allow for continuous monitoring of the operation's evolution.
The use of drones and specialized equipment will allow for enhanced surveillance in hard-to-access areas, control large gatherings of people, and detect incidents early. The Guardia Civil seeks to anticipate possible problems arising from an event that will gather thousands of citizens in very specific points of the territory.
Coordination with Traffic, emergencies, and administrations
The operation will be carried out in permanent coordination with the General Directorate of Traffic, Civil Protection, emergency services, regional and local administrations, regional and local police, and the rest of the involved agencies.
This coordination will be key to managing movements, ordering access, enabling safe observation areas, and keeping clear the routes that may need ambulances, firefighters, or rescue teams. Recommendations for travel
Among the main recommendations, the Guardia Civil asks to plan travel well in advance, consult the official pages about preferred observation points and exclusion zones, avoid unnecessary trips, and follow at all times the indications of the agents and emergency services.
It also reminds the importance of parking only in designated areas. Parking on shoulders, forest tracks, or narrow roads can block the passage of emergency services and complicate any intervention. In the event of possible delays, it is advised to carry enough water, food, and fuel.
Protection of the natural environment
The Guardia Civil will also carry out an informative and preventive task to protect the natural environment. The armed institute asks not to leave waste, not to access private estates or agricultural land, and to minimize any disturbance to the fauna and flora.
Specifically, it reminds that it is prohibited to light fires in places where there are restrictions and that parking on dry vegetation should not be done, as the hot components of the vehicle can cause fires. It also insists on always keeping clear the accesses that may be used by emergency services.
