The general secretary of the PSdeG, José Ramón Gómez Besteiro, has responded to the reports that link the Partido Popular to the payment of defense expenses by the former ministerial adviser Koldo García, emphasizing that "whoever can do it, let them do it," and adding that "you have to add on a tag line, whoever can do it, let them do it, that the PP pays."
Besteiro has made these remarks during a press conference, after being asked about news pointing to the European Public Prosecutor's Office and the Central Operational Unit (UCO) of the Guardia Civil investigating a alleged fraud involving European funds aimed at modernizing the Madrid–Seville high-speed rail line.
On this matter, the Socialist leader indicated that it is breaking news which, in his view, should not "cause excessive alarm." "What needs to be done is to facilitate all kinds of investigation," he defended, insisting that "absolute transparency must prevail, as it cannot be otherwise."
He then went into the so-called Koldo case. "Look, they didn’t talk about the Koldo case during all these months. It already seemed strange to me that Alfonso Rueda, in the control session, didn’t bring up his name, and now we find out that, indeed, the PP was paying Koldo," he said.
In this context, Besteiro reiterated that the Partido Popular has to provide public explanations about these reports. In his view, "this is the reality we are living in today: a party funded by those they said was the maximum corruption in the State."
For this reason, he concluded that one should "expect anything" from the conservative formation, hinting that, in his opinion, this kind of conduct no longer surprises him.
