The team of the European Center for Neuroscience (CEN) underlines that intensive neurological rehabilitation can be "fundamental" to maintain autonomy and improve the quality of life of people with multiple sclerosis, provided that it is carried out with an individualized approach and closely coordinated with medical treatment.

Coinciding with World Multiple Sclerosis Day, which is celebrated on Saturday, May 30, CEN emphasizes the need for specialized and comprehensive care for those living with this chronic neurodegenerative pathology. According to the Spanish Society of Neurology, in Spain it affects more than 55,000 people and around 2,000 new cases are diagnosed each year.

"Multiple sclerosis does not affect two people in the same way," recalls the Director of Therapies and Co-founder of CEN, Cristina Vázquez. For this reason, she insists that it is "fundamental" to adapt rehabilitation and therapeutic goals to each patient, taking into account not only the physical symptoms, but also the emotional and functional impact that the disease entails.

In the case of María José, 59, diagnosed in May 2025, the rehabilitative approach has helped her improve her mobility, better understand her body's responses, and regain confidence in daily tasks.

Along with intensive physical therapy, the center incorporates advanced rehabilitation and neuromodulation technologies aimed at enhancing the patient's overall well-being. In this regard, programs such as CEN+ (European Center for Neuromodulation) complement treatments with innovative techniques aimed at regulating the nervous system and alleviating associated symptoms, such as stress, sleep problems, or fatigue.

CEN also calls for greater social awareness of a disease that, on many occasions, progresses without obvious external signs. "People associate multiple sclerosis solely with wheelchairs or significant physical disability, but often the pain, fatigue, or difficulty moving are not visible from the outside," explains María José.

Therefore, the center advocates for a more humane approach towards people with neurological diseases and emphasizes the importance of having reliable information, personalized treatments, and continuous professional support from the earliest stages of diagnosis.
