At least 14 people have lost their lives, including six police officers, and another 22 have been injured this Sunday in northwestern Pakistan after a suicide attack against a police station located in the unstable province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The attack occurred in the town of Kabal, in the Swat Valley, when a man with a vest loaded with explosives unsuccessfully tried to get past a security checkpoint near the police station. The individual is believed to have attempted to take advantage of the disorder generated by a youth demonstration in the vicinity, called precisely against the wave of violence that has been hitting the valley for months.
The police official Fida Hussain has confirmed the provisional balance to the GEO TV network and announced that the injured have been transferred to the nearby Saidu Sharif University Hospital for treatment.
Only in July, about 154 people have died from terrorist attacks in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, according to the Pakistani Institute of Conflict and Security Studies, a 105% increase compared to the previous month.
Violence there has been practically an endemic phenomenon for 20 years. For the Pakistani Taliban, it was a true stronghold until their expulsion in 2009 after a major military offensive, but the armed group has continued launching attacks from the ungovernable Afghan border.
