The Belgian authorities have arrested this Saturday a Canadian citizen of Chinese origin who was interning at the headquarters of the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), a military structure integrated into NATO, after being accused of spying "for the benefit of a third country."

According to the Belgian Prosecutor's Office, the woman is also attributed with the crime of "being part of a criminal organization," within a case opened after SHAPE itself reported to the General Intelligence and Security Service the existence of suspicious behaviors by the intern.

The procedure has already passed to the hands of an investigating judge of the Court of First Instance of Hainaut, based in the division of Mons, in the west of the country and near the border with France, according to information published by the newspaper 'Le Soir.'

After the opening of the investigation, the security forces carried out several searches at the suspect's home, against which a detention order was issued on Friday.
