Eight people, among them six minors, have lost their lives this Friday after being found with gunshot wounds in a house in Grand Haven, in the state of Michigan, in the northeast of the United States. The discovery occurred after emergency services received several reports of a possible fire in the house, according to local authorities.
According to Jake Sparks, sheriff of Ottawa County (a Canadian province bordering the United States), the investigation is currently described as "complicated," and he has confirmed that firefighters went to the area in the morning after receiving smoke alerts, although they could not locate any fire in the house. Several hours later, he assured, the firefighters returned after receiving reports of white smoke coming from the same area.
"When they entered, they realized that there were several deceased people inside the house," Sparks has confirmed in statements to the media.
Investigators have indicated that eight bodies were located inside, of which six belong to children between 5 and 15 years old. Although the victims have not yet been fully identified, it is suspected that they all were part of the same family.
"The causes of death have not yet been determined," Sparks has declared, although the possibility that the fire was intentionally set after a possible homicide or suicide is being considered. However, he emphasized, "the investigation is in an early stage."
