Israeli opposition leader Gadi Eisenkot has publicly asked this Friday the president of the country, Isaac Herzog, to entrust him this coming Sunday with the formation of a new Government with the aim of ending in a definitive manner the “existential threat” that, in his view, the current prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has become.
In a note shared on social networks, Eisenkot has reiterated that the alliance led by the Likud of the head of the Executive has, in practice, been defeated in the legislative elections of October 27, despite the fact that Netanyahu’s list ended up being the most voted.
Although Eisenkot has not gone so far as to detail whether he already has a secured majority, the leader of the Yashar party emphasizes that at this moment there are 74 deputies (including those of his formation) who “have no trust whatsoever in the prime minister” and has pointed out that the talks he has held since the elections with parties opposed to Netanyahu are moving forward in a positive way.
In the last hours, even several Arab-Israeli forces have conveyed, at least preliminarily, their willingness to support Eisenkot. However, the head of the opposition has warned that any party that intends to join his possible coalition will have to accept his four “fundamental principles,” including “recognition of the State of Israel as a democratic Jewish State” and “recognition of Hamas as a terrorist organization” with the objective of “dismantling its military power.”
Eisenkot, in any case, has presented himself as the only viable alternative to take Israel out of a “real, tangible and dangerous emergency,” considering that “the current Government threatens, in its most basic essence, the very existence of Israeli democracy.”
“A situation in which a minority caretaker prime minister, who has lost so drastically the trust of the people, continues at the head of the security system and the law enforcement forces is so dangerous that it must not be prolonged for a single day,” he has reiterated.
