At least four passengers have lost their lives and 88 have been injured after several carriages of a passenger train derailed and overturned on the railway line that connects El Cairo with Asuán, at the level of the Jarza crossing, in the Egyptian governorate of Guiza, according to what the Ministry of Health of Egypt has confirmed.

"The number of injured increases to 88 and there are four passengers dead in the Al Ayat train accident, according to the preliminary count," the Ministry of Health said in a statement.

The Minister of Health and Population, Dr. Jaledabdel Gafar, has ordered that the highest level of alert be activated in all health centers in the governorates of Guiza and Beni Suef in order to reinforce medical and emergency care for those affected. For this purpose, 72 ambulances have been deployed to assist and evacuate the injured.

According to the latest tally, 49 injured people have been transferred to Al Wasta Hospital, in the governorate of Beni Suef, while 29 have been admitted to Al Ayat Hospital and the remaining ten receive care at Al Ayat Hospital, in Guiza.

The Health portfolio has stressed that it maintains "constant monitoring" of the condition of the injured and that it is providing all of them "full medical care."
