High-ranking political officials and military commanders from Iran have come out in the last few hours to contradict the latest message issued early this morning by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, regarding the supposed reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, insisting that no type of understanding has been reached regarding this strategic enclave.
"It is simply false," according to sources from the Iranian negotiating team to the semi-official agency of the country, Fars, which also received the denial from military officials under anonymity. "As long as the hostile and malicious acts of the United States continue, the strait will remain closed," they added.
The Iranian agency Tasnim, close to the Revolutionary Guard, has also rejected the message disseminated by Trump a few hours ago, in which he claimed to have opted to halt the latest operations against Iran, supposedly at Tehran's request, with an eye on a possible reopening of the maritime passage.
In reality, the Iranian Foreign Minister, Abbas Araqchi, conveyed this past Saturday night to his Saudi counterpart, Faisal bin Farhan, that the situation in Hormuz remains exactly the same and that the country is ready to respond to any U.S. offensive. This conversation with the head of Saudi diplomacy was later recounted by the crown prince of the Arab kingdom, Mohamed bin Salman, during the phone call he had with Trump this Sunday.
Russia, an ally of Tehran, has expressed in recent weeks its growing discomfort with the course of the talks, something that is reflected in the statements published this Sunday on social media by its permanent representative to the UN, Mijail Ulyanov, who has stated that these negotiations are turning into a real puzzle.
"There are starting to be too many contradictory statements about the search for an agreement, and most of them come from Washington," lamented the Russian diplomat.
