The councilor of the Sea, Marta Villaverde, emphasized the "indissoluble bond" between Moaña and its sea-related activity during the proclamation that marked the beginning of the XXVIII Festa do Mexilón of the municipality.
As explained by the Galician Government in a press release, in her speech the regional official stressed that mentioning Moaña is "to think immediately of the sea." "A sea that has been feeding families for centuries, creating wealth with much effort and writing stories of bravery," she pointed out.
Villaverde insisted that in this locality "converge" fishing, shellfishing, aquaculture, the transforming industry, and shipyards, forming a single reference sea-industry chain in Galicia.
In this context, she dedicated a special thanks to the bateeiras and bateeiros, recalling that behind every mussel that reaches the plate there are "many hands weathered by the salt, that know how to wait and that have never lost respect for the sea."
Additionally, she evoked the "pioneering role" of Moaña in the advancement of Galician mussel farming to the current situation, in which "more than 3,300 rafts outline the estuaries."
To conclude, Villaverde expressed her gratitude to the Association of Women of Moaña for the invitation and highlighted the "solidarity effort and the perseverance of its members to keep alive" one of the "great gastronomic and popular events" of the region.
