The Iranian chief negotiator and head of the Parliament, Mohamed Baqer Qalibaf, has said this Wednesday that the results of the 'midterms', in which the Democratic Party has taken control of both chambers of Congress, show that the American public has said "no to war" and has issued a warning to Washington about the serious consequences of ignoring this mandate.
Through a message shared on his social media after the electoral reversal in the northern American country was confirmed, Qalibaf said that, whether "out of conscience or because of the cost of life", the people of the United States have rejected the military option, a message that the Islamic Republic "backs".
Along these lines, the senior Iranian official delivered a serious warning to the United States Administration: "If the US Government betrays the will of its public to serve blackmailers and international financiers, it will learn that our 'NO' is accompanied by a nightmare".
Qalibaf's response comes amid ongoing political reshuffling in Washington. The Democratic Party has carried out what is seen as a historic election day by exceeding expectations and ensuring full control of Congress, reaching -- at minimum -- the 51 seats necessary in the Senate and clearly surpassing 218 in the House of Representatives.
The outcome of the 'midterms' has been read as a punishment vote against the policies of the current Administration and has been marked by the economic pressure derived, among other factors, from the rise in fuel linked to the conflict with Iran initiated by US President, Donald Trump.
Meanwhile, the northern American leader has avoided taking responsibility for the result and has attributed the Democratic advance to the fact that his name was not on the ballots, insisting that, had he run directly, Republicans "would have swept".
