The Argentine president, Javier Milei, has used his speech before the plenary session of the Ibero-American Summit to bring back to the forefront the “sacred cause” of Malvinas and reaffirm Argentina’s willingness to channel the conflict with the United Kingdom through the diplomatic route.

“For Argentines, Malvinas is a sacred cause,” the head of state emphasized, who took advantage of his intervention in Madrid to stress that his country “inherited from Spain the titles of sovereignty over the Malvinas Islands and reaffirmed them through numerous acts of government.”

The leader has expressed his recognition to the 22 States that make up the Ibero-American Community for the support provided in this matter and for its “support for the resumption of negotiations between Argentina and the United Kingdom,” support that will be reflected in a statement at the close of the summit.

In his message, Milei has again addressed London, reiterating his willingness to “negotiate in accordance with the relevant resolutions of the United Nations.” In his view, the United Kingdom now has “the opportunity to practice respect for the international rules” that it demands of the rest of the international community.

At the same time, he has stressed that Argentina maintains its “permanent and non-waivable objective of recovering the full exercise of our sovereignty over the Malvinas Islands, South Georgia, South Sandwich Islands, and the surrounding maritime spaces.” “We pursue it by peaceful means and in accordance with International Law,” he emphasized.

In relation to the “threat” that, as he has denounced, is represented by the Sea Lion project for the exploitation of hydrocarbons on islands under British control, the president has defended his “strategy that articulates diplomatic action with the administrative and judicial instruments offered by our legislation.”

“We activate sanctioning procedures and file criminal complaints against the companies involved and their executives. And our Government will assert Argentine rights with all the force,” Milei concluded.
