The Moroccan monarch, Mohamed VI, has decided to grant a pardon to more than 630 inmates convicted in Morocco, among whom are several people sentenced for "extremism and terrorism." The measure has been adopted on the occasion of a religious holiday that commemorates the birth of the prophet Muhammad, as confirmed by the Ministry of Justice of Morocco.
The department has specified that the pardon reaches a total of 634 people, some of whom were already at liberty. Among the beneficiaries are 449 prisoners who will see their prison sentences reduced. Furthermore, the statement notes that within this group there are those convicted for "cases of extremism and terrorism," without providing further information, as reported by the Moroccan official agency MAP.
Regarding these last individuals, whose exact number is not detailed, the Ministry of Justice has emphasized that "they have expressed their support for the constants and sacred values of the nation and for national institutions," in addition to "modifying their ideological orientation and rejecting extremism and terrorism."
