The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, sent a congratulatory message to the United States this Saturday on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the text that marked the birth of the country, underlining the historical bond that has united both sides of the Atlantic since then.
In her public message, disseminated through social networks, Von der Leyen focused on the depth of that relationship between Europe and the United States, built over the centuries on a foundation of shared values and a close human connection.
"For 250 years, our transatlantic alliance has been forged from our shared values and family ties. And, at times, it has been strengthened by the immense courage and lives lost in defense of freedom," Von der Leyen stated in her congratulation, sent via social media.
The President of the Community Executive pointed out that one of the most visible emblems of that friendship is the Statue of Liberty, the monument that France gave to the United States in 1886 to celebrate the centenary of the Declaration of Independence and as a gesture of fraternity between both peoples.
"The Declaration of Independence gave rise to a new nation founded on the ideals of freedom and the pursuit of happiness. That is why, tonight, fireworks will light up the skies on both sides of the Atlantic," Von der Leyen concluded.
